Things to See and Do on a Rainy Day

The forecast is rain and you'd like to do something indoors...there's plenty to choose from!

Gairloch Heritage Museum contains an award winning display of life in Wester Ross in earlier times

Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve is a beautiful conservation area, with ongoing restoration of the original 'Caledonian forest' and associated wildlife such as goldcrests, pine marten, crossbills and rare plants such as the ginger-coloured liverwort, Herbertus borealis, only found here on the reserve within the UK. The Visitor Centre has an interactive display of the geology, ecology and wildlife within the reserve and the surrounding area. Find out more about the unique rocks that form the Beinn Eighe mountain ridge. The centre also has children's exhibits, and during the breeding season the highlight is live webcam footage of a black throated diver's nest. Another place to watch wildlife including seals, birds and if you're lucky an otter is the wildlife hide on the shores of Loch Ewe at The National Trust for Scotland's Inverewe Garden, just outside of Poolewe.

The Perfume Studio and Aroma Cafe at Mellon Charles have a tempting menu which include haggis quiche and there is an adjacent gift shop which sells the range of perfumes and soaps which are made on site. These are scented with natural essential oils, with some unusual combinations such as cardamon with bitter orange and roibois. There is also a photography studio offering photographic courses and photographic work on display and for sale. If the weather improves, there are also some short trails to the shore in front of the cafe where you might see otters or seabirds.

The Gairloch Pantry near Gairloch Pier opened in April 2013 and is a lovely cosy place serving Pumphrey's coffee and homemade breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

To sample some locally smoked fish, visit the Isle of Ewe Smokehouse at Ormiscaig, Aultbea where the sustainably sourced fish is first hand-cured in dark rum, brown sugar and Dead Sea salt, before being smoked gently using oak whisky barrel chips, larch and ash. The shop is open 9-5 Mon-Fri and 9-12 Sat.
